This summer, Orlando Junior Academy will host its second Edible Academy, a 2-day teacher training at OJA’s kitchen lab and garden. The training will include discussions and activities that will help teachers build their own garden and cooking curriculum customized to their resources, needs and ability. Slow Food Orlando is proud to offer scholarships for 2 teachers to participate in this training! Based on the schedule below, we think this will be a great opportunity for teachers to learn new ways to integrate good, clean and fair food into their students’ lives:

Wednesday, June 12th
The Academy begins at 8:00 am with registration and a welcome reception at the Edible Schoolyard Orlando. Enjoy your first day of the Academy with light breakfast refreshments, meet fellow participants and Academy staff, and receive your program curriculum binder. With your assigned cohort, spend the day in your first of two Academy sessions—garden and kitchen development. Each session is designed to be informative for individuals of varied backgrounds and expertise, and all participants attend both days. Lunch is served midday, and programming ends at 3:00 pm.

Thursday, June 13th
Begin with breakfast at 8:00 am, attend the remaining session — either garden or kitchen development. Break for lunch at midday, and continue with programming until 3:00 pm. After breakfast, attend the remaining session (garden or kitchen development) with your cohort until lunchtime. After lunch will be a session focusing on how to translate and apply edible education programs with your local partnerships. Closing activities and day ends at 3:00 pm.

Over the course of the Academy, participants will have an opportunity to learn about curriculum integration and development, funding strategies, volunteer management, class scheduling, rituals and routines of garden and kitchen classrooms, outreach strategies, and much more. Participants will leave the Academy with garden and kitchen lessons linked to academic standards, tools for developing programs in their own communities and strategies to strengthen existing programs, and an in-depth understanding of how the Edible Schoolyard operates on a daily basis.

How to Apply:

Download and fill out the application and submit it directly to the school (30 E. Evans St. Orlando, FL 32804). The school will select the recipients of our scholarships. Best of luck from the gang at Slow Food Orlando!

Join us for an unforgettable evening of dining under the stars at Grande Lakes Resort’s Whisper Creek Farm!

Slow Food Orlando is honored to be included in the Grand Opening of Whisper Creek Farm at the Orlando Grande Lakes Resort. Whisper Creek Farm is an incredible project born from inspiration. The Grande Lakes culinary team designed it with the help of My Yard Farm to provide the resort restaurants with fresh, organic produce. The farm also offers al fresco dining for up to 250 people, making it the ideal location to host authentic farm-to-fork outdoor events (to learn more, check out this article from our friends at Edible Orlando).

That’s where we come in! In celebration of the Grande Opening, we are partnering with Grande Lakes to present a SLOW DOWN Dinner. Guests will enjoy an authentic Argentinian BBQ using seasonal organic ingredients, signature cocktails and craft beer, local chef and farmer appearances, live music, and a silent auction benefiting Slow Food Orlando.

We know this will be an unforgettable evening, but we want to make it even more memorable. That’s why we’re using this generous opportunity to launch the Slow Food Orlando Community Garden Fund! Once it is adequately funded, we’ll be offering grants to local schools and organizations that need assistance installing, updating, or providing educational programming for their gardens. We think this is a great way to support a community that values good, clean and fair food, and we hope you do to! We hope you see you at the dinner, so please refer to the details below to make your reservation today!

We are pleased that our co-chair, Gabby Othon Lothrop will be attending Terra Madre, Salone del Gusto and Slow Food International Congress this fall as a U.S. Delegate. Every five years, Slow Food leaders from 130 countries come together at the International Congress to share their stories and shape the future of Slow Food’s global network. The 2012 International Congress is extra special, as it will be the first to happen concurrently with Terra Madre & Salone del Gusto, a biennial international food and farming conference that celebrates innovative solutions and time-honored traditions for feeding the planet in a good, clean, and fair way.

This year, Slow Food USA has invited Gabby to be a U.S. delegate for this landmark food and farming conference on October 25-29 in Turin, Italy. Being selected for this historic event is a special honor. Gabby is one of 200 to be selected as a delegate out of a pool of 600 applications. Not only does this mean that Slow Food leaders admire the incredible work that Gabby is doing, it also means that we believe Gabby is an important voice in Slow Food and the broader U.S. food movement.

While Slow Food offers housing, food, and ground transportation for delegates, we ask that delegates assume responsibility for their own flight tickets and other incidentals. Many delegates require financial support to attend. We invite you to join us in supporting Gabby, with a donation today.

Both the International Congress and Terra Madre & Salone del Gusto are powerful and transformative experiences. Delegates leave inspired to change the food system through a global consciousness and deeper respect for the diverse, international food movement.

The theme of this year’s event is Feeding the Planet, because we believe everyone on earth has the right to access good, clean, and fair food. The conference will give Gabby a unique opportunity to help build relationships and solidarity between the global South and global North, as well as among diverse communities within the U.S.

Please support Gabby in joining the most diverse U.S. delegation yet to attend the International Congress and Terra Madre & Salone del Gusto. You can make a donation by clicking the donation button below.

Here at Slow Food Orlando, we’re ready to get more involved in the community and make good, clean fair food a priority for Central Florida. As with the global and national components of the Slow Food movement, our success depends on people power – our members, volunteers, and event attendees are all co-producers and at the core of this cause. Knowing that, we would like to get to know our current members and meet potential new members. That’s why we’re hosting a social happy hour event this Wednesday, June 13th at Redlight Redlight Beer Parlour. Join us to mingle with fellow members (and potential new ones!), meet your board, find out what our committees are up to, and find out how you can get more involved with the organization. All that, and we’ll be serving up craft beers from a Florida brewery, appetizers made with local ingredients, and tasty desserts. We’re looking forward to meeting you and planning for a stronger local food scene in Central Florida!

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my blog. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickies to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

As a new WordPress user, you should go to your dashboard to delete this page and create new pages for your content. Have fun!
