Deep Creek Ranch, a family-operated farm, was founded in DeLeon Springs in 1883. The first David Strawn in America bought his land from William Penn sometime around 1725. His only son continued to farm near there, until David’s descendants began the family's westward and then southward expansion. Today, we are the owners and stewards of land in east Central Florida used to provide Registered Angus and South Poll cattle and hair sheep as breeding stock and for food, with a focus on the highest possible quality beef and lamb. We manage our property for the health of the land and forests, as well as the wildlife native to it (including Osceola wild turkeys, white tail deer, fox squirrels and gopher tortoises), and we think living is first about health—meaning food is of primary importance. We believe in the humane treatment of the animals and plants entrusted to our care.

Where to buy: Alachua County Farmers’ Market

Growing up in Singapore, Jenny Franklin dreamed of one day owning a piece of land large enough to grow fruits and vegetables.  When she met and married her husband Chuck and moved to the U.S., she finally realized that dream. Jenny and Chuck bought the 28-acre family farm in beautiful High Springs in 1996.  Starting from just a few persimmon trees, the farm has turned into hundreds of fruit trees a decade later.  High Springs also features an assorted variety of Muscadine grape vines and blueberry patches, as well as (most recently) honey bees. Part of Jenny and Chuck’s mission is to educate the public about locally grown food, and each year they open their orchard and invite visitors to pick their own fruit during harvest season.

As the farm develops we also hope to create more projects in living systems, including rain water catchment, alternative energy, green construction, beekeeping, and mycology. We will produce for a CSA and market this year and are excited to be involved in the Central Florida Slow Food movement. You can also reach us through localharvest.org.

Olde Hearth Bread Company

Offerings: Breads, dinner and sandwich

Shannon Talty and Janice Brahm created the Olde Hearth Bread Company in 1998. Their original vision was to establish a retail and wholesale business offering high-quality artisan breads and pastries—but the demands by chefs in Central Florida for quality breads ignited the wholesale business and gave the company its direction. Olde Hearth focuses on purchasing the highest quality ingredients and creating products both healthy and tasty for their customers. They use unbleached and unbromated flour and preservative-free ingredients, as well as minimal automation and a commitment to old-world “hand made” processing, to produce breads that are flavorful and unique to this market. Jamie Niemann of Harmoni Market, one of the Slow Food proponents that uses locally produced foods including Olde Hearth breads on its menu, says “serving local bread is one way we stand out.  And it’s working—our customers come back and ask for it.”

The Green family has farmed the land surrounding spring-fed Lake Florence for four generations. The Green groves produced oranges, tangerines and grapefruit for over a century, until back-to-back freezes in 1983 and 1985 laid permanent waste to the fruit and trees. David Green and Dawn Taylor-Green started Winter Park Farm in 2001 to breed and raise Angus cattle, so that the farm could continue to produce fresh food for the community and make a living for the family. In the process, they discovered what an amazing animal the cow really is, and traded cattle production for dairy farming—a move that enables them to work together with the cows “in harmony.” Now, their business and the cows thrive side by side as they produce Florida’s only raw artisanal cheese.

Where to buy: Audubon Park Community Market, our stores and on localharvest.org

Wild Ocean is a fish house and seafood provider dedicated to a local food system in which wild Florida seafood plays a key role. With a dock in Port Canaveral and a shrimp-processing facility in Titusville, both housing retail markets, we are directly connected to the source of our seafood. Family owned and operated by the Thompson and Merrifield families, we have dealt with several generations of East Coast Florida fisherman and shrimpers. We believe in the seasons, whether mandated by nature or government, because it helps us strive for the sustainability of our fisheries and ensure the freshness of our seafood. Not only is our shrimp local and wild but also hand-processed in our own HAACP certified facility. Migratory patterns, government regulation and weather are all important determinants in procuring the freshest seafood and we hope everyone understands the importance of choosing product that is fresh from Florida.
